Breaking the cycle of Violence: ZAPF’s Role in Empowerment

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) threatens the dignity of individuals and the fabric of society. Under this year’s 16 Days of Activism theme—“Towards 30 Years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls”—Zimbabwe reflects on its progress and recommits to building a future free from violence. The Zimbabwe Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF) joins this global movement, highlighting how financial empowerment through pensions can help break the cycle of GBV.

Financial Security as a Lifeline

Economic dependence often traps individuals in abusive situations. ZAPF advocates for robust, inclusive pension systems that provide financial stability and independence, especially for women. These systems can be powerful tools for survivors to escape violence and rebuild their lives with dignity and security.

Empowering Youth for a Violence-Free Future

Young people hold the key to ending GBV. ZAPF is committed to educating youth on financial literacy and the importance of planning for the future. By fostering independence and resilience, we can cultivate a culture of equality and mutual respect in Zimbabwe.

Advancing the Beijing Declaration’s Vision

Zimbabwe has made progress through initiatives like One-Stop Centres and community-based shelters for survivors, but challenges remain in enforcement and resources. ZAPF supports these efforts by promoting economic empowerment as a critical part of the solution, aligning with the Beijing Declaration’s principles of equality and opportunity

As the 16 Days campaign unfolds, ZAPF urges all Zimbabweans to reflect on how financial empowerment can transform lives and combat GBV. Together, we can build a Zimbabwe where every individual lives free from violence and with dignity.
